A Journey of Passion and Dedication: Yoset Altamirano, M. Ed.

A Journey Begins

In 1996, Yoset Altamirano, a young and passionate educator, embarked on a journey that would span over two decades and two continents. Originally from Honduras, Altamirano began her career in her native country, driven by a deep commitment to teaching and making a difference in students' lives. Her path, marked by resilience and dedication, eventually brought her to Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) in Houston.

A New Chapter in Houston

In 2005, amid the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Altamirano found herself at Memorial High School in SBISD. The welcoming school culture and incredible students quickly captured her heart. Despite receiving offers from other districts, it was the sense of community, supportive environment, and opportunities for professional growth in SBISD that made her feel at home.

“I was drawn to SBISD not just because of the opportunities it provided, but because it felt like a place where I could truly make an impact,” she says. “SBISD has always felt like home to me.”

Embracing a Vision for Multilingual Education

Now in her 20th year in the school district, Altamirano has stepped into a new role as the director of the Multilingual Department. Her vision is clear: to enhance support for emergent bilingual students and their families. This includes fostering an inclusive environment, promoting family engagement, and implementing effective instructional strategies that cater to diverse learning needs.

“My goal is to create pathways for academic excellence and personal growth for Every Child,” Altamirano explains. “I want to ensure that every student, regardless of their language background, has the resources and support they need.”

Supporting T-2-4 and District Priorities

As Altamirano advances SBISD's T-2-4 vision, her focus is on harnessing the unique strengths emergent bilingual students bring from their home languages. By offering targeted support and working closely with educators, she ensures these students not only thrive academically but also develop the Core Characteristics essential for being T-2-4 ready.

“This approach aligns with our commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school,” she notes. “We’re dedicated to making sure they are ready for life.”

A Proud Legacy

As she continues to shape the future, Altamirano's legacy is one of passion, commitment, and dedication to the students and families of Spring Branch.

“I am deeply proud to serve our families, students, and community and excited about the opportunities ahead,” she says. “I look forward to contributing to the success and growth of our emergent bilingual students.”
