Coding begins with an idea and a question: How can we make this work? Exploring the answer gives students opportunities to think creatively, work through challenges and discover the value of trying again.

At Meadow Wood Elementary (MWE), Linda Zappa is bringing that spirit of exploration to student learning through Coding Connections, a project receiving a 2026 J. Landon Short Mini Grant for Educators.

Congratulations to Zappa for this recognition and her commitment to creating new learning opportunities for students.

  • Coding Connections puts a spotlight on the thinking behind coding: breaking a challenge into smaller steps, recognizing patterns and developing a sequence to reach a goal. These skills help students approach problems with purpose and explain the reasoning behind their choices.

Coding also offers a meaningful opportunity to learn through revision. When an approach does not produce the expected result, students can examine what happened, adjust their thinking and try another solution. That process helps build persistence and confidence that extend beyond a single lesson.

Made possible through generous community support, the J. Landon Short Mini Grants for Educators help turn creative ideas into meaningful classroom experiences. It’s #CollectiveGreatness in action.
